Listed Dead
Cletus Jung, 23-year-old son of
Mr. and Mrs. Joseph F. Jung, 601 North Illinois, has been declaired dead
by the Navy Department. The young man's father received notification yesterday
in a letter from Secretary of the Navy James V. Forrental.
Cletus ranked as machinist's mate third class, was aboard the Destroyer
Noel when the ship was lost in the second battle of the Phillippine Sea.
The battle took place October 25, 1944 off Leyte. The family was orginally
advised that their son was missing in action in a telegram received November
18, 1944. Cletus had been in the service more then three years when he was
declaired missing.
Born in Mascoutah, he was employed at the Ely-Walker Dry Goods Company
before his entry onto the services.
Surviving besides his parents are four brothers, Alvin Jung, South 59th
Street; Harvey Jung, 1215 North Church Street; Andrew Jung, West Washington
Street; Earl Jung, South 11th Street, and three sisters, Mrs. Lillian Hollerbach,
North Fifth Street; Mrs. Martha Dittle, North Church Street and a twin sister,
Mrs. Cleota Paoli, North Fifth Street.
