An email from Bill Gentry (gntry.srch@att.net) March 31, 2004 Bill is our familys genealogist, author and editor of the Journal of Gentry Genealogy "While working on Madison Co, KY census records in connection with another project, I have come to the conclusion that your Oliver Perry Gentry very probably was indeed a son of John and Polly Gentry, as stated in "The Gentry Family in America". The census records for John's family for 1810, 1820 and 1830 are not entirely consistent but do not contradict the possibility of "O.P." being part of the family, which can be summarized as follows: 1810 1820 1830 John b. 1765-1784 1775-1794 1780-1790 Polly 1784-1794 1775-1794 1780-1790 son James 1800-1810 1802-1804 1800-1810 m. Nancy Crown, 1830 dau Eliz. 1800-1810 1804-1810 --- son ??? 1800-1810 1804-1810 --- dau Polly 1810-1820 1810-1815 m. Garland Wilson, 1829 dau Nancy 1810-1820 1815-1820 m John Reeves, 1829 dau Suas 1810-1820 1815-1820 m. Merrell Park, 1831 son O.P. (Mislabeled sex?) 1810-1820F 1815-1820 m. Martha Jones, 1836 son ??? 1820-1825 dau ??? 1825-1830 Oliver is of course in the 1840 Madison, KY in 1840 with his own family, as well as in the 1850 and 1860 Brown Co., IL census. I read the 1850 census as giving his age as 39, but the 1860 census with an age of 45 is more consistent with reality. Since John and his cousin, Richard Gentry obviously named sons for Commodore Oliver Perry, the naval hero of the War of 1812. His famous battle of Lake Erie took place in 1813, so the two Oliver Perry's must have been born after that. The question of "The Gentry Family in America" giving his wife's name as a "Miss Parks", can be explained as a confusion with the fact that his brother-in-law, Merrell Parks served as the bondsman for the marriage bond. While the census records are not conclusive, it really strains credibility to find one of the other Gentry families in Madison Co. as being parents of O.P. In addition, in 1840, not far from his home, we can identify his older brother James, Josiah Gentry (the brother of O.P.'s father John), Thomas (a son of Josiah), and Mary (the widow of O.P.'s grandfather Martin. The other Oliver Perry Gentry, son of Richard Gentry, clearly was not the O.P. who moved to Illinois, since he can be found in Monroe Co. MO in 1850, along with many other Missouri relatives who were descendants of Richard. Bill"
